Not quite the Wars of the Roses…

The families

There are 36 acknowledged families on the Rim. Each maintains a steadfast in the region, though the location of these worlds varies depending on the power of the individual family – the more powerful families can maintain their steadfasts closer to the Gyre. Thus, the families can be ranked by six ‘circles’ indicating how close to the Gyre the family steadfast is located.

Any member of a family is referred to as an ‘entitled’. Their actual title is often a matter of whim, and may relate to great moments from their personal history. These titles cannot be easily ranked, and knowing who outranks whom is a matter of delicate diplomacy and deep background knowledge. The rank most frequently used is ‘Prince’, but ‘Lord’, ‘Palatine’, ‘Emir’, and ‘Shahzade’ are also in common use.

Most entitled are blood relations of other entitled (not necessarily from the same family), and all have control of the Gyre. One becomes entitled by being given the family name of another in a ritual as ancient and lengthy as that of marriage — an entitled will introduce the chosen person to their existing family, and if they approve of the choice, will go on to declare that they are now that person’s mother or brother (those terms do not change with the gender of the declarant).

Each family appoints a Princeps, who is their ambassador to the Legion and to other families, but is not necessarily either the most powerful member of the family, nor the one actually in charge. Most families do not have a single leader, but operate on consensus politics (often a lengthy process, hence the need for a Princeps to deal with external matters).

Children of the entitled are rare, and are raised in common. They are not considered properly part of the family until they have navigated the Gyre and returned to claim their name.
